Delivery Robots Revolutionizing Logistics with Practical Innovation

Delivery robots are a type of automated robot which door-to-door service, bringing food or other items bought online to the end customer. Robot parcels they deliver, are mounted on wheels and have cameras and sensors. These pieces of equipment provide autonomous functioning.

They provide an alternative to traditional delivery services, leveraging automation and artificial intelligence. Unlike other robots they aren’t humanoids looking like persons, they look like moving boxes. Other types of delivery robots are emerging in the market which can fly like delivery drones.

The instant success that these robots received helped to grow the Delivery Robot Market. According to a research report by Astute Analytica, the market will register a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 17.31% during the forecast period from 2022 to 2027.

The robots were being tested in limited numbers before the pandemic started. But pandemic-related worker shortages and a desire for contactless delivery have expanded their use.

Working of Delivery Robots

Just like self-driven car delivery, bots have a complete sensor array system to let them detect obstacles and understand their location compared to these.

While the specifics will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer most of these robots use multiple cameras and ultrasonic sensors providing them with thorough visual data as well as a simple way to detect moving objects and distances.

That said sensors aren’t the sole ones responsible for delivery robots reaching their destination. Using specialized software these robots are designed to be able to map out their route based on pre-existing maps and experience and information they’ve gathered on the area.

These robots largely approach movement like a human so they have to take into account traffic lights, tend to prefer the sidewalks, and if possible, will choose short and efficient routes.

Applications of Delivery Robots

Currently delivery robots are mainly used to deliver small packages on an order basis. These are generally small in scale and usually only have enough space to carry a single package which tells us the motive for making delivery robots. Mainly used in sales only.

Delivery robots have mostly contributed to e-commerce and food delivery businesses by scaling machines. Delivery robots are designed to respond to simple shipment & logistics. Trucks and other large vehicles are excellent for transporting multiple orders or crates to retailers, but even a small order present in the truck can force the driver to leave their usual route for the delivery.

Meanwhile, a delivery robot can be used for individual orders providing a fast and fuel-efficient alternative that will improve delivery times and help logistics drastically.

Although the term robot might sound futuristic the fact is that some of us are already walking side by side with delivery robots, and these reliable machines will only become more common as time passes.

Closing Note

Delivery robots are very practical as these robots are small autonomous driving machines that can carry and deliver shipments. Thanks to the advanced sensor and positioning technology these robots have, while they might have some small locomotion challenges to face, they already work and are being used as we speak.

Robot Delivery System New Beginning in the Delivery Industry?

Starting from 1889, home deliveries are now part of every household. These deliveries include food & beverages, healthcare products, household & electronic items, and even the automobile industry provides delivery of cars and motorbikes. It was the time in the 1880s when many delivery companies were set up after many successful home deliveries, led by the oldest delivery company in the world, the first package delivery company founded in 1852 by Wells Fargo. The company was not very popular for its reliability and efficiency, so the standards were revolutionized by the Pony Express.

Delivery System since then has upgraded to a lot better standards and now robots are taking space in the global delivery sector. Delivery robots are one of the key segments of robots-as-a-service (RAAS) along with factory robots, cleaning robots, security robots, and so forth to increase automation in different sectors.

Pros of Robot as a Delivery Partner

A few years ago, delivery robots were a part of science fiction but now it is turning into reality. These autonomous bots can be easily seen on the streets in the United States and the United Kingdom delivering food, medicines, and small packaged items. Now the question comes, although the delivery industry has a well-established delivery structure managed by humans, why robots? There are several pros behind this. Robots are faster than humans because of fewer factors affecting the speed of delivery like traffic, rain, etc. Robots are way more cost-effective. Humans need a tip for every delivery and in many countries, the wage of a delivery person is too high, especially in the United States but these robots need an initial investment to set up after which robots require maintenance. Other benefits of replacing humans with robots are having the ability to track them, improving customer experience, and helping in reducing pollution.

Cons of Robot as a Delivery Partner

Having such advantages of robots in the delivery industry there are still limitations of replacing humans. Robots aren't advanced to handle big deliveries such as automobile deliveries, etc., which still require the human touch. Currently, most robots can handle only a single delivery at a time, which isn't too efficient, unlike humans, who can deliver several items at a time.

Future Aspects of Robot Delivery

Industrialists know that the future is all based on automation and most of the blue-collar jobs will be performed by robots only. Since the robots arrived, it has shaped many industries like the automobile production industry, the cleaning, industry, and so forth. In spite of having cons, the demand for these robots has increased rapidly. The Robot delivery market size in 2021 was US$ 100.8 Mn which is expected to grow up to US$ 262.7 Mn by 2027 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 17.31% during the forecast period of 2022-2027.
